The Mother at Home (Book Review)

I would like to recommend an excellent parenting resource, available to be read for free online. It’s a little book called The Mother at Home, by John S. C. Abbott. It’s an old book, published in 1833.

Here’s a little excerpt:

A pious and faithful mother may have a dissolute child.

Celebrating Hanukkah, the Feast of Dedication

Thanks to reader Shoshanna for writing this for us!

Hanukkah means dedication, so it is known as the Feast of Dedication (or re-dedication), and it is also known as the Festival of Lights.  It is not a commanded feast, but it is fun, and there is a lot to learn from it as well, so why not celebrate it? …

How a Home Business Can Benefit a Homeschooling Family

by Laurie Neumann

Running a home business is becoming more and more popular these days, especially in light of the economic times.  I feel that a homeschooling family can really benefit from having a home business for many reasons.

Being a former homeschooler myself, I know firsthand that it can be hard financially to operate on one income.…

What a great way to turn your tabletop into a chalkboard!

My friends over at the Unclutterer had a great idea on their blog today. The basic idea is to use inexpensive matte-finish oil cloth, plus chalk, to decorate your table for Thanksgiving. You can write right on your tablecloth, to put names where guests are to sit, to label dishes, or to keep the kids from getting bored by letting them play tic-tac-toe, etc.…

Field Trips

Honestly, my planning list said that I should write a blog post about field trips this week! But I was starting to think I’d better write about something else, when a gentleman at our church approached my husband about wanting to take our children on a field trip to a local apple orchard.…

Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt

This week our children went on a nature walk to a nearby “forest” that our school district sponsors. It’s a beautiful sanctuary, not far at all from our house.

Because I hadn’t been feeling so well, I decided to send them on a scavenger hunt, with a list of what to take and what to find.…

Managing Your Home When You’re Tired

I was intending to give you a full-length article today, but I’m sick and have had an exhausting week. So I think I’ll “practice what I preach” and give you the short version instead of the long version. It will probably be easier for you to absorb anyway!

Must Our Children Obey?

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’ Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:1-4).

Notebooking

Can you give me ideas about what you guys do to notebook?  I would like to incorporate it in our homeschooling this year. Just have a few questions about the notebooking… do you have one notebook for all subjects or do you have a separate for Bible, history, science, etc.?

How much time should Mom spend homeschooling?

Anne, I was reading about your new school year. How do you fit in “together time”, individual time, and your other subjects that I read about? Do you do all those subjects every day?  I am having trouble [figuring out how to get it all done].
